Michigan Gas Utilities (MGU) is sharing an important safety step as winter storms move through southern Michigan. MGU urges customers to stay warm and safe by keeping their natural gas meters and appliance vents clear of snow and ice.
Snow and ice that build up on natural gas meters can create a dangerous situation. The extra weight of snow and ice can stress a meter’s piping, and could lead to a natural gas leak. Meters covered in snow and ice also are more difficult for MGU’s natural gas technicians to access and work on, including in an emergency.
How to safely clear and protect a natural gas meter
- Use your hands, a brush or broom to remove snow and ice.
- Never use shovels or other tools to clear a meter. They can cause damage or a natural gas leak.
- Use caution when operating a snow blower or shoveling near a meter.
- Remove icicles and snow above the meter. Falling ice can damage the meter or its piping.
Along with keeping meters clear, MGU reminds customers to remove snow and ice from appliance vents. A buildup of snow or ice can block an appliance vent, possibly trapping carbon monoxide indoors and creating a hazardous situation.
