Michigan Gas Utilities’ (MGU) new safe digging “ambassadog,” Bandit, a 1-year-old dog from Benton Harbor, is getting right to work reminding everyone to call 811 at least three days before starting to dig.

MGU’s staff officially welcomed Bandit with the pup-arazzi treatment, taking photos and posing for a picture with the Llewellin setter during a visit in Benton Harbor in late May. Local news outlets also attended the visit to meet MGU’s top dog for safety.

MGU ambassadog’s guest star appearance

Bandit’s time in the spotlight continued a few days later with a visit to WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids. Bandit, his owner Julie and MGU Vice President Nick Krzeminski were the news station’s featured guests during an interview about this year’s safe digging contest and the importance of calling 811 before starting any digging project. Bandit’s unique role is an exciting one for both his family and for MGU as it works to help customers safely use energy every day.

“We do this contest to get awareness out to the public, and we use our furry friends to help us get that word out,” said Krzeminski. “Safe digging is what we’re trying to do. Whether it’s a mailbox or a shrub in your yard … anytime that you’re digging in your yard, you should call 811.”

Bandit earned his new title by finishing as the top dog in MGU’s safe digging contest this year, which featured more than 13,000 total votes. He will now spend the next year starring in an awareness campaign to remind everyone to call 811 at least three days before starting any digging project. This important step allows MGU and utility operators to mark the location of underground lines, keeping customers and communities safe.
