Rewarding efforts to enhance safety in local communities
MGU’s Rewarding Responders Grant helps southern and western Michigan first responders acquire lifesaving equipment or training. The program helps departments meet vital equipment needs — from protective clothing and handheld lights to heavy-duty rescue tools — that increase safety for everyone in their communities.
Since the program began, MGU has awarded more than $95,000 to help dozens of emergency response agencies strengthen public safety.

The Wayland Fire Department is among the recent recipients, using a 2025 grant to purchase a multi-gas detector. The detector helps alert firefighters to the presence of hazardous gases, allowing them to quickly remove people and themselves from the area. It also helps firefighters avoid harmful gas levels while working to extinguish fires.
“The Rewarding Responders Grant provided valuable equipment to our department,” said Jon Timmers, fire chief — Wayland Fire Department. “This grant allowed us to purchase gas monitoring equipment, which is used to protect both the community and our firefighters. We sincerely appreciate the continued partnership of Michigan Gas Utilities and their support of our local responders.”
How to apply for a grant
Emergency response agencies can apply for a 2026 grant on MGU’s website.
Public safety agencies are eligible for a grant if they:
- Operate in MGU’s service area.
- Did not receive a grant in 2025.
- Complete the online grant application.
- Demonstrate the equipment or training they will acquire is part of a well-designed effort to improve public safety. Grants also can be used for unique safety-related projects that are one-time efforts.
Grants of up to $2,000 are available to eligible departments.
