Michigan Gas Utilities (MGU) is urging customers behind on natural gas bills to take steps now to avoid disconnection. Winter Protection Plan agreements in place this winter have now ended.
Disconnection always a last resort
Customers who contact MGU and establish and maintain payment arrangements are not at risk for disconnection. MGU works closely with customers throughout the year on payment arrangements and energy assistance options.
MGU customers can set up a payment arrangement or be connected with financial assistance options anytime by going to michigangasutilities.com or the MGU app. Customers also can call 800-401-6402.
Energy assistance options
MGU customers may be eligible to receive help with natural gas bills through assistance options from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and Michigan Department of Treasury. These include:
- State Emergency Relief Program
- Michigan Energy Assistance Program
- Weatherization Assistance Program
- Home Heating Credit

Significant federal assistance also is available. The State of Michigan has as much as $269 million in low-income assistance funding available this heating season.
